Genital warts are fairly common among sexually active men and women in their 20s. The genital wart may start out as a small discoloration that evolves into a small bump or it may take on more of a 'cauliflower' appearance. In men genital wart will show up on the penis, around the scrotum or in the area of the rectum. In woman genital warts appear at vulva or cervix , in the vagina or on the perineum.
Medical Treatment for Genital Warts
A person who contracts this form of HPV may not realize it for several weeks or even several months. Mild genital wart may, at first, be invisible to the naked eye and completely painless. There may be an itch and possibly a burning sensation and a slight discoloration of the skin in the area of the itch. If the wart is formed internally (e.g., in the anus or vagina or on the cervix) the only clue may be a slight itch or burning sensation. As the wart develops it will usually appear at first as a bump and then become a visible growth as previously described. If you have reason to believe you may be at risk for genital warts, a doctor will be easily able to confirm or eliminate your suspicions. The doctor will swab the suspected area with a solution of acetic acid and, if there are unformed genital warts in that area, they will show up as white areas on the skin.
If genital warts make their first appearance as mature warts you should take it as a sign that you may have an immune system problem that requires immediate medical intervention.
If you are diagnosed with genital warts it is important that you allow treatment for the warts and equally important that your partner(s) be notified, examined and, if necessary, treated by a physician.
